Adaptive Sports Program of Ohio promotes the health and wellness of individuals with physical and visual disabilities through competitive and recreational adaptive sport opportunities. In six cities, ASPO provides Ohio youth ages 4–18 with opportunities to participate in annual sports camps and sled hockey, power wheelchair soccer, wheelchair softball, wheelchair basketball, kayaking, sailing and statewide wheelchair track programs. ASPO is a strong advocate for inclusion. At the state level, the organization has helped wheelchair competitors gain approval to compete on school track teams, provides costly racing wheelchairs and gloves and offers assistance to school athletic directors and track coaches. ASPO has also developed a school-based adaptive sports pilot program for wheelchair basketball that it hopes to expand throughout the state. Youth who participate in ASPO programs experience social, emotional and physical benefits that improve their overall health and wellbeing.
